In Movement started in 2003 as a pilot project in two orphanages. During that time, we saw the potential to develop an arts education program using Ugandan artists as facilitators which could expand opportunities and improve the education of disadvantaged children in Kampala.
Over the next two years, we established ourselves as an organization and program team. By the beginning of 2006, the program was in full swing. We began the year with 5 facilitators working with 30 youth from one orphanage.
In 2007, In Movement built its own art center in Kansanga, Kampala, to conduct our activities and hold performances, as well as rent to the public to generate local income.
In 2010, we are now working with 12 facilitators and approximately 360 youth from six orphanages and primary schools: Katwe Youth Development Association (KAYDA), Daughters of Charity, Peoples Concern Literacy Center, Banunule Primary School, Reach Out Primary School, and Railways Primary School.
In Movement is a multinational team from many different backgrounds and walks of life. Currently, the majority of our creative facilitators (teachers) are Ugandan artists. This is one of the keys to the success of this program, because these facilitators are able to provide arts instruction as well as serve as role models for the students. In Movement also supports the ongoing professional development of the facilitators to ensure the excellence of the program.
In addition to the creative facilitators, the In Movement team in Uganda includes a country director, bookkeeper, administrators for programs, facilitation, facilities/purchasing, and publicity, as well as an in-house counselor. In Spain there is the board of directors of the foundation, its founder and president Begoña Caparrós working both in Spain and in Uganda, as well as an accountant. In Movement is also supported by a team of international experts in business, law, arts, education and development.
